Miss Joanna Fitzpatrick of Evans Mills, aged 59, for 32 years a teacher in various schools in that vicinity and one of the best known instructors in northern New York, died Sat. morning at 2 in the Sisters' hospital following an operation. She was taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon and underwent the operation Wednesday morning. She rallied from the operation but Friday evening her condition became much worse and her family was summoned. Miss Fitzpatrick was born in the town of Leray, Sept. 18, 1863, the daughter of the late John and Mary Fitzpatrick. Her parents came from Ireland. All her life had been spent in that vicinity with the exception of five years spent as a teacher in Long Island schools. Her teaching experience was in the days when there were few High schools and when the number attending district schools was large. At times she had between 40 and 59 pupils. Although she never recceived any education except that offered by the district school of her day, she was rated as one of the most capable teachers in the North Country and had established a wide reputation. Besides being capable, she was unusually popular amoung her pupils. Miss Fitzpatrick taught in many of the district schools in the vicinity of Evans Mills and also in Carthage. The last five tears of her teaching experience were spent on Long Island. She was retired about five years ago on pension, after servng 32 years. She then bought a home on North Main street, Evans Mills, and three years ago moved to it where she had since resided with her sister, Miss Mary Fitzpatrick, and brother , Richard Fitzpatrick. Susviving, besides the sister and brother, is another sister, Mrs. Ann Besha of Carthage. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 9:30 from the home and at 10 from St. Mary's Catholic church, Evans Mills, with burial in the Catholic cemetery. The body was removed to the Guilfoyle undertaking rooms and will be taken to Evans Mills Sunday morning.
