Mrs. Almira Besha

Mrs. Almira Besha, widow of the late Joseph V. Besha, died Friday at the old family home in Leray, in which town she was born, March 16, 1817, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sixbury. Mrs. Besha was one of the oldest inhabitants of Jefferson County, and saw the town of Leray grow from a forest, with occasional clearings, to a populous farming community. She was a woman of sterling qualities. She was a devoted mother of the old school and raised a family of 10 children, of whom the following survive: Mrs. John Fraley, of Philadelphia; Charles E. Besha, Carthage; Ferdinand A., Deer River; George A., Algonia, Ia., and William M. and Nettie Besha, of the town of Leray.

The Report I referred to, from the Town of Wilna, was from my father's files. It is not in great shape so I'll send you a copy by regular mail. I'll also send you a copy of the document I have regarding CFB's intention to become a citizen to see if it's the same document you have. It was also in my father's things. I have nothing regarding CFB's wife Jean Marie. All I have is her name in the first report, the one from the Town of Wilna. As you probably know, the Town of Wilna has been a part of Fort (Camp) Drum since the early '40's or maybe before. All I have on Susan is from a headstone in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Evans Mills. It's difficult to read. I think it says: SUSAN wife of Francis Becha (spelling) former wife of Peter Croissani died Jan 14, 1885 79yrs 10 mo Susan was born in 1804. CFB was born in 1786 so Susan was only about 18 years younger so it's possible they could have married at least from an age stand point. The Report I referred to, from the Town of Wilna, was from my father's files. It is not in great shape so I'll send you a copy by regular mail. I'll also send you a copy of the document I have regarding CFB's intention to become a citizen to see if it's the same document you have. It was also in my father's things. I have nothing regarding CFB's wife Jean Marie. All I have is her name in the first report, the one from the Town of Wilna. As you probably know, the Town of Wilna has been a part of Fort (Camp) Drum since the early '40's or maybe before. All I have on Susan is from a headstone in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Evans Mills. It's difficult to read. I think it says: SUSAN wife of Francis Becha (spelling) former wife of Peter Croissani died Jan 14, 1885 79yrs 10 mo Susan was born in 1804. CFB was born in 1786 so Susan was only about 18 years younger so it's possible they could have married at least from an age stand point. Mrs. Almira Besha, widow of the late Joseph V. Besha, died Friday at the old family home in Leray, in which town she was born, March 16, 1817, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sixbury. Mrs. Besha was one of the oldest inhabitants of Jefferson County, and saw the town of Leray grow from a forest, with occasional clearings, to a populous farming community. She was a woman of sterling qualities. She was a devoted mother of the old school and raised a family of 10 children, of whom the following survive: Mrs. John Fraley, of Philadelphia; Charles E. Besha, Carthage; Ferdinand A., Deer River; George A., Algonia, Ia., and William M. and Nettie Besha, of the town of Leray.

In the matter of the application of Elizabeth Huber for a pension as the widow of Henry Huber late of the Town of Little Falls deceased

Herkimer County Ls George Rosencrantz of the town of Little Falls, County of Herkimer and State of New York being duly sworn saith that he is seventy years of age and upwards, and that his father was the Rev. Abraham Rosencrantz the minister of the Reformed protestant Dutch Church in the German Flats in the now county of Herkimer from the anchist revolution of deponent previous to the Revolutionary War & during that war & long afterwards until his death - that a short time since Peter Huber of the county of Jefferson a son of old Captain Henry Huber called upon this deponent to search the records kept by this deponents father of marriages where the ceremony was perfomed by him & alledged that his mother stated that she was married to said Henry Huber by deponents father. This deponent saith he searched the only book of records in deponents posesion of his fathers record of marriages & could not find the marriage of said Henry Huber and in fact no record of marriages going so far back in date as the widow of said Henry Huber alledges they were married, and deponent saith that said Peter also searched said book of records & which book deponent states is the only book of records of baptisms and marriages or letters extant and that when his father died about the year 1796 all his books & papers extant were left in the care and posesion of this deponent. This deponent saith that on Saturday the second of December instant he was looking over some papers which he supposed useless in an old chest of drawers and that

in looking them over he came across a half sheet, or leaf, of paper in his said fathers hand writing and on which he found the record of marriages commencing with the 15th day of February 1774 and ending the first day of November of the same year, on which half sheet or leaf of a book is the record of the marriage of said Henry Huber in the record spelled in the German Henrich Huber to Elizabeth Frank on the 27th M

Adam Loux (now Loucks), whose house, about three-fourths of a mile north of Stone Arabia, on the farm now occupied by J. Ervin Graff, was a meeting place of the Tryon county Committee of Safety, was born in Schoharie, N. Y., Dec. 15th, 1715; was married Oct. 16th, 1739, and died Feb. 14th, 1789. His son, Peter Loucks, was first lieutenant of the 3d company of the Palatine battalion, under Capt. Christopher W. Fox, at the battle of Oriskany.

Joseph V. Bisha came from France to his country in 1828, at that time being 13 years of age. In 1841 he married Almira, daughter of Robert Sixbury, and followed the occupation of farming on road 8, where they remained 16 years. They then removed to Pleasant Valley, in the town of Cape Vincent, remaining there five years, when they returned to this town and purchased a farm on road 35. During the next 19 years they resided in several different places, finally returing to the farm on road 35, where Mr. Bisha died November 24, 1883. Their children were Mary V., Sarah J., Malinda, Louis J., Charles E., Ferdinand A., Julia A., Peter J., George A., and William M. The latter resides with his mother on the old homestead.
