Passenger list note for the ship: "C. Amelia" or "Amelia":
      See http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/famhist/genealgy/mfests.htm

      "1826
      Aurelia/Amelia
Note cited as Amelia in transcription of Teare's rememberances - the handwritten manifest could be interpreted either way.
      Arrived New York c. 14 June 1826 (ref #338), 216 tons burthen,William McTaggart Master
      William Tier [Tear], 40, Fisherman, (b. c.1783); wife Joaney Gawne Tear,40; children Judy (16), William (13), John(12), Thomas(7), Margaret(3) [and James (7 weeks) - not on manifest] + father John Tear, (65)
John Gawn [Gawne] , 34, fisherman, (first cousin of Joney Gawne), wife Ann Gawne, 30 and children: John, 9; Eliza, 7; Daniel, 4. [according to Thomas Tear there were 4 children - possibly a babe in arms was not included as for James Tear above ?]
Peter Howland, 25, Tailor, is also shown as from Isle of Man but this could be an error in filling out the manifest as the next passenger is from Ireland.
See account in chap 14/17 of Manx, Isle of Man History of Manx People who came to America Lake County Genealogical Society (ed L McNaughton) 1991
Thomas Tear quoted William Tear, jnr, as 15 but did say that at that time the Manx did not pay great attention to birthdates, and that Joaney Gawne came from Jurby; the IGI lists a marriage William Tear and Joney Gawne at Andreas 24 Mar 1808; their eldest son William was christened on 28 March 1813 at Andreas.
This William Tear is the author of two letters that helped spark the migration - see letter of Nov 18th 1826 and that of 25th December 1826 .
The Gawnes are I think John Gawne and Ann Sansbury, married 30 March 1815 at Kk Christ Rushen where son John was christened 10 Jan 1816.

Amelia, built 1826, brig, 1840 sold to Jameson & Co, Kirkcaldy. 200 tons

An account of what it was like aboard the Amelia. Taken from:
      http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/famhist/genealgy/voyages.htm

The account left by Thomas Tear is probably much more typical of the type of conditions encountered by the the 'middle class' Manx emigrants of the 1820's and 1830's.
We were finally put on board a small brig, if I remember rightly, of 200 tons, but seems wrong, to me, as she had on 200 passengers, mostly Irish [ see Act of 1819 which limited passengers 2 per 5 ton burthen]. Her name was Amelia of Liverpool, at the helm was, Captain Tagert. They had no such accommodations, as they advertised. We occupied what was called the second cabin, with some English people, and a few better class Irish, on the opposite side of the cabin. But It was not separated from the steerage, as I think it was called, by any door, which was on the same deck, and just forward of us, and was filled with Irish. It was separated from the cabin by a rough board partition, with cracks that the children could peek through.
The passenger quarters had three rows of berths all around, and there were two low benches, which was all the furniture there was in our part. There were two hatches over the passengers, affording all the light and ventilation that passengers had, and if It was rough, these were partly closed. There was a coal fire, in a grate on deck for the passengers to cook by. One man died on the passage, but to me, the wonder, is that half of them were not dead. The scent down there in that dirty, ill-ventilated hole, was anything but sweet. Mother was sick all the way, also Mrs. Gawne, but the rest, stood it well. The burden of cooking fell on my oldest sister, but she seemed to benefit by it. The passengers carried and cooked their own provisions, and as the fire would not accommodate them all at once. This made considerable dissatisfaction, eating was done, without setting of tables, and just as you could catch it.

      Paul,

Thanks for the very interesting info about CFB.

The Report I referred to, from the Town of Wilna, was from my father's files. It is not in great shape so I'll send you a copy by regular mail.

I'll also send you a copy of the document I have regarding CFB's intention to become a citizen to see if it's the same document you have. It was also in my father's things.

I have nothing regarding CFB's wife Jean Marie. All I have is her name in the first report, the one from the Town of Wilna. As you probably know, the Town of Wilna has been a part of Fort (Camp) Drum since the early '40's or maybe before.

All I have on Susan is from a headstone in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Evans Mills. It's difficult to read. I think it says:

      SUSAN
      wife of
      Francis Becha (spelling)
      former wife of
      Peter Croissani
      died Jan 14, 1885
      79yrs 10 mo

Susan was born in 1804. CFB was born in 1786 so Susan was only about 18 years younger so it's possible they could have married at least from an age stand point. There is a headstone in the Evans Mills Cemetery marked:

FRANCIS C. BICHET (this no doubt Claude Fran

Charles Edward Besha, a successful business man of West Carthage, is a descendant of Jefferson
County pioneers, and may take a just pride in his ancestry, as can also his wife. The first
record now attainable regarding Mr. Besha's paternal forebears is found in the passport of his
grandparents, Francis and Mary Jane Bichet, who left Mozer, Maine, de la Commune de Rouchamp,
France, in 1828, the passport bearing date March 15. They were among the people induced by Le Ray
de Chaumont to come to this country and settle on his lands in the Town of Le Ray, and here they
died, the wife dying January 15, 1859, and Mr. Bichet subsequently married Susan ------.
Joseph Victor Bichet, son of Francis and Mary Jane, was born June 8, 1815, in France and came
with his parents to LeRay. They first located in the northern part of the town, known as "Dutch
Settlement," where Joseph found occupation in helping make a home. He engaged in farming, renting
land, and had just purchased the farm on which his widow and son and daughter now live two weeks
before his death, November 24, 1883. This is located northeast of the village of Evans Mills, and
north of the ancient village of Slocumville, and includes one hundred acres of farming land. That
he was a successful farmer is evidenced by the fact that he was able to purchase this property
out of his savings. He was an active Democrat and a leading member of St. Mary's Church which he
was instrumental in organizing and in which he was a trustee and one of the builders of the house
      of worship.

At a Surrogate's Court held in and for the County of Jefferson, at the surrogate's office in Watertown in said County on the 14th day of March A.D. 1859.
      Present - Jab R. A. Perkins, Surrogate

Be it remembered that on the 20th day of January A.D. 1859, Joseph Bichet of LeRay in said County came before said Surrogate and made and filed his petition on oath stating and thereby said Surrogate was satisfied that Francois Bichet, late an inhabitant of said County and owning real and personal estate therein had died having previously duly made and published his last will and testament disposing of said estate, and therein had named the said Joseph Bichet as one of the executors thereof, that the heirs and next of kin of said deceased are as follows, and none other or others, viz: Joseph Bichet, said petitioner, and John Bichet, of LeRay, Jefferson County, New York; Mary Bichet of Buffalo, Erie County, New York; and Rose Perrot, wife of Ferdinand Perrot, of Ortonville, Outogamie County, Wisconsin, all children of said deceased, and all of full age. And that Susan Bichet, of full age, residing in Le Ray aforesaid, is the widow of said deceased. Thereupon process was continued until the return day thereof at which time and place last mentioned appeared in Court before said Surrogate the said Joseph Bichet, executor as aforesaid, and filed proof by affidavit of the ___ [true?] publication of said citation in the State Paper according to law, and of the personal service thereof on all of the said persons residing in this state, and no one appearing in opposition to the proceedings herein, the said Surrogate did proceed to hear the proof and allegations in the premises. Whereupon said Surrogate being satisfied from said proofs and examinations that said will was duly executed; that the testator at the time of executing the same was of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, of full age, and not under any restraint, and competent to make a will, and that said will was duly made and published as a will of real and personal estate; Doth order adjudge and decree that said will be and the same is hereby prooved, approved, established and confirmed as a good and valid will of real and personal estate, and that the same be recorded as such; and the same with the proofs thereof taken, and the certificate thereon endorsed, is recorded in the office of said Surrogate, in the book kept for that purpose which record follows immediately hereinafter in this book. And it is further ordered that Letters Testamentary issue to Joseph Bichet and John Bichet, the executors in said will named.

      LE RAY

      THE EARLIEST SETTLERS

Into this wilderness the first come was Benjamin Brown,
brother of General Jacob Brown. He explored the country
in the autumn of 1801, chose a spot on the banks of
Pleasant creek, where Le Rayville now is, and commenced
to clear the ground and to make preparations for the
construction of a dam across the stream. The closing in
of winter suspended the work, and he and his party of
laborers retired to Brownsville to await the opening of
spring. In the following April he returned to his
purchase, setting out from Brownsville on the 17th of
that month, under the lead of his brother Jacob, who
proceeded with compass, to lay their course, Benjamin and
his party following, and cutting a track as they went.
Short as the journey was, it bought some hardship, for
their provision-train, which has been expected to follow
them closely, encountered so many obstacles and delays
that it did not overtake them until the second day, when
they had reached their destination, not a little
exhausted from their prolonged season of fasting.

A log house was erected for the workmen, and, although
Benjamin was then a bachelor, he made further
preparations for the reception of a prospective Mrs.
Brown. She arrived in July, a newly-made wife, and the
first white woman who set foot in the present town of Le
Ray. Meanwhile good progress had been made in the
construction of a saw-mill upon the creek, an enterprise
which had chiefly induced Brown's settlement at this
place. it is related that a the 'raising' of the frame
men came from a long distance, not more to help on the
work than to participate in the festivities of the
occasion, for not only did they feast on a remarkable
fine carcass of venison well roasted, but they liberally
moistened the viand with deep draughts of spirituous
sustenance. In those days they would as soon have thought
of constructing a building with a frame as of rearing the
frame without ardent spirits! As it was, all went off
propitiously, and before winter came the mill was
      completed.

Several new settlers came in 1803, and more in 1804.
Among those who arrived in the first-named year were
Joseph Child, with his three sons, Daniel, Samuel and
Moses, from Pennsylvania, Thomas Ward, Daniel Coffeen,
John Petty, and Robert Sixbury. The Childs settled in the
neighborhood which still bears their name, southwest from
Le Rayville, and Ward located where Joseph Bichet now
lives, between Le Rayville and Evans' Mills.
