      Declaration.

      In order to obtain the benefit of provision made by an act of Congress, passed July 7, 1838 entitled "An act granting half-pay and pensions to certain widows."

      Oswego County

      On this sixteenth day of September in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty five personally appeared before the Court of Common Pleas for said County now sitting Catharine Grinnel, a resident of the town of Sheffield in the County of Hastings and Province of Upper Canada, aged 80 years who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by an act of Congress passed July 7, 1838 entitled "an act granting half-pay and pensions to certain widows." That she is the widow of Jethro Grinnel, late of the town of Sheffield in said Province of Upper Canada who departed this life on the fifth day of December 1844, that her husband the said Jethro Grinnel was a soldier of the Rhode Island Line during the War of the Revolution. As Declarant was not married to him until after said war she cannot state his officers nor the particulars of his service. She has heard him relate that he enlisted & served three years with the Continental forces of Rhode Island, That he came to the State of New York with said troops, and that while here his enlistment ended & he was discharged at Stillwater. He never returned to Rhode Island but settled in the State of New York. During his last years was too infirm both in body and mind to leave home & apply for his pension & declarant believes that he never did apply for a pension. Declarant moved with said Jethro Grinnel into Canada her present residence fourteen years ago.

      And declarant further saith, that she was married to the said Jethro Grinnel on the month of April seventeen hundred and eighty four by Emanuel Degraff, Esq. at Amsterdam, N. Y. that the following persons were present at her marriage, to wit: Declarants brother & sister, all deceased except declarant's brother William whom she believes is living.
      That previous to her said marriage she resided in the town of Amsterdam, N. Y. and bore the maiden name of Sixbury.
      That her husband the said Jethro Grinnel died as aforesaid on the fifth day of December Eighteen hundred forty four, since which time she has remained his widow.

      William Sixbury, a resident of the village of Amsterdam in said county aged eighty three years being duly sworn according to law deposeth & saith that he is a cousin of Catherine who is now the widow of Jethro Grinnel, and both of whom formerly lived in Amsterdam aforesaid. Deponent has been acquainted with said Catharine from a child & became acquainted with said Jethro Grinnel immediately or very soon after the close of the War of the Revolution. He then came to live in Amsterdam aforesaid from the State of Rhode Island and very soon thereafter became acquainted with said Catherine whom he immediately married. Said Catherine then resided in Amsterdam aforesaid & bore the maiden name of Sixbury. Said Jethro & Catharine were duly married by Emanuel Degraff Esq. in Amsterdam aforesaid in the year seventeen hundred & eighty four in the month of April. Deponent was present & witnessed the marriage ceremony. Deponent remembers the year in which said marriage occurred from the fact that it took place very soon after the close of the War of the Revolution & from the further fact that Deponent himself was married in the year seventeen hundred & eighty three and said Jethro & Catharine were duly married as aforesaid about one year after Deponents marriage occurred. Said Jethro & Catharine lived together as husband & wife in Amsterdam aforesaid for a few years after their said marriage & had two or three children born in said place. They afterward moved to Watertown in the County of Jefferson in said State. Said Jethro Grinnel was reputed at the time said mariage occurred to have been a soldier during the War of the Revolution and to have served in the Rhode Island Line of Troop for some years.

      Hannah Sixbury a resident of the village of Amsterdam in said County aged eighty one years being duly sworn according to law deposeth & saith that she was well acquainted with Catharine Grinnel who is now the widow of Jethro Grinnel. Deponent became acquainted with said Catharine when a girl. She then resided in Amsterdam aforesiad. Deponent was also well acquainted with said Jethro Grinnel who (as deponent was informed & verily believes) came from the State of Rhode Island to Amsterdam aforesaid & shortly thereafter became acquainted with said Catharine who bore the maiden name of Sixbury and whom he married. Said Catharine and Jethro Grinnel were duly married in Amsterdam aforesaid by Emanuel Degraff Esq. of Amsterdam aforesaid in the month of April in the year seventeen hundred and eighty four. Deponent remembers the year in which said marriage occurred from the fact that it occurred very soon after the close of the War of the Revolution & from the further fact that the deponent herself was married in the month of February seventeen hundred & eighty three & said Jethro & Catharine were married as aforesaid about one year after Deponent. They lived together as husband and wife in Amsterdam aforesaid for a few years after their said marriage and had at least two children born in said place & then moved out in the Black River Country in said State, at or near Watertown in the County of Jefferson. Deponent was present & saw the said Jethro & Catharine duly married at the time & place aforesaid. Said Jethro was reputed at the time of his said marriage to have been a soldier of the Rhode Island Line during said War of the Revolution and to have served as such for some years.
