    Immigration:
    1. This passenger list states the 'Native Country' for 'Antonin Weber' was Bohemia. I place reasonable doubt that he came from Bohemia. A reasonable assumption might be that Antonin may have lied about his place of origin and also may have lied about his age.
    2. His citizenship papers state the following:
"Came to U.S. before he was eighteen" and "that he emigratied to the United States and landed at the port of New York on or about the 15th day of Nov., 1892." This is puzzling, since the passnger list for the S.S. Lahn clearly shows that he arrived after this date. Since Anthony did not apply for citizenship until several years later, he may have simply forgotten the emigration date, however the date is quite specific.
    3. To support item 2 above, we find the following in a Watertwon Daily Times newspaper obituary (1939) for Anthony Webert: "He came to this country with his mother about 53 years ago, his father having died in Germany, and the family lived first in the town of Clayton." That would make his year of arrival in N.Y. 1886, which doesn't correspond with either the the passenger list information or his naturalization papers. However, the fact that this obituary says "He came to this country with his mother" corroborates with the fact that we see a name very close to his on the passenger list and that Elisab. Webert and her daughter Karolina (Caroline) appears very close to him in the list. This is convincing evidence that the passenger list is correct and that it is in fact Anthony Webert who is referred to as 'Antonin Weber' in the pasennger list.
    4. A Tomas Weber appears next to Antonin and is also 18 years old. I have no idea who Tomas Weber is. Perhaps he was a brother or a cousin?
I do not know of a Tomas Weber in Jefferson County, N.Y., unless I am missing something.

    Dear Ms. Delles,

I am looking for a record of marriage for my 2nd great grandparents:

    John Biggers
    and
    Margaret VanBrocklin

Other sources state that they were apparently married on January 17, 1869. The location of their marriage is not known to me, however, I do know that John Biggers lived on a farm on Countryman Road, Theresa in 1864, a few years prior to their marriage.

Please check the records available to you.
If you cannot find a record of such marriage, please advise as to where to look next.

If you have access to email, I would very much appreciate a reply via email as this greatly speeds up the communication process. My email address is listed below.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

    Sincerely,

From the Final Report on the Battlefield of Gettysburg (New York at Gettysburg):
"Bridge and Station, Thoroughfare Gap, and Gainesville. From August I4th to the 29th, Tower's Brigade served as the rear guard, while the Ninety-fourth was detailed as the final rear guard, much of the time deployed as skirmishers under fire, with such food as could be gleaned from corn fields, and with a constant loss of men killed, wounded, missing, or exhausted by hard service in the depressing heat of August."

From more research, I find the following details of the "Battle At Rappahanock Station"
    Battle At Rappahannock Station
Location : Culpeper County and Fauquier County.
    Campaign : Northern Virginia Campaign.
    Date : August 22-25, 1862.
Principal Commanders : Maj. Gen. John Pope [US]; Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson [CS].
    Estimated Casualties : 225 total.
On August 20 - 21, Maj. Gen. John Pope, withdrew to the line of the Rappahannock River. On August 23, Confederate cavalry made a raid on Pope's headquarters at Catlett Station. Over the next several days, the two armies fought a series of minor battles along the Rappahannock River.

    American Civil War
    August 22-25, 1862
Early August, Lee determined that McClellan's army was being withdrawn from the Peninsula to reinforce John Pope. He sent Longstreet from Richmond to join Jackson's wing of the army near Gordonsville and arrived to take command himself on August 15. August 20-21, Pope withdrew to the line of the Rappahannock River. On August 23, Stuart's cavalry made a daring raid on Pope's headquarters at Catlett Station, showing that the Union right flank was vulnerable to a turning movement. Over the next several days, August 22-25, the two armies fought a series of minor actions along the Rappahannock River, including Waterloo Bridge, Lee Springs, Freeman's Ford, and Sulphur Springs, resulting in a few hundred casualties. Together, these skirmishes primed Pope's army along the river, while Jackson's wing marched via Thoroughfare Gap to capture Bristoe Station and destroy Federal supplies at Manassas Junction, far in the rear of Pope's army. Notes:

(Research):Nancy, Margaret's sister married John Walts, Jr.
The 1860 Census shows Margaret (28) living with her parents and a 16 year-old boy named Grandison and a 2 month old female named Nilia. Grandison is Charles G. Van Brocklin (6 years old in 1850 census), son of Nicholas and Anna, brother to Margaret. Nilia appears to be Margaret's daughter. (from a previous marriage?). The 1870 census shows a Cornelia Walts living with the Biggers family as step-daughter to John Biggers, head of household. Is this "Cornelia Walts" who appears on Eva Biggers' death certificate?

Was Margaret Van Brocklin also married to a Walts, as her sister Nancy was? And if so, how many children dd she have from that marraige? Just one?
If Margaret was married to a Walts, he would most likely have come from the same family that her sister married into. Which one did she marry? When/where were they married?
Cornelia (step-daughter to John Biggers) is living with the family in 1880 census. She is 20 years old. Margaret is 48. If Cornelia is Margaeret's daughter from arevious marriage, them Margaret was previously married at 18 years old (1849).

It is also possible that Cornelia (VanBrocklin) was an illegitimate child.

    Dear Sirs,

I have just completed an online search for my 6 immigrant ancestors who arrived in New York City on October 31, 1842. The original Port of Departure was London. However, the online database (Ancestry.com) did not list a ship name. According to this online database, 127 other passengers arrived on the same day, so I am assuming that these other passengers were also aboard this same ship.

The original passenger list microfilm (NARA M237 - roll 51) does not show a ship name either (I checked.)

How can I find the name of the ship?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Sincerely,

    Paul F. Kelly

    Paul,

Attached is photo 398 which provides a full view of John Biggers' stone.
Photo 399 was a second view of the stone and the top and bottom were cropped off. The stone has inscriptions on 3 of the 4 sides and I can forward the two other photos if you would like to have them.

    Best regards,
    Sid & Bonnie

    Paul

Short answer no, not yet at least.

Following up on messages from Al I currently have a John HARRIS m to an Ann MAYCOCK 21st October 1798 in Stanton Harcourt. As yet I only have one child, James HARRIS born 16th January 1804 in Southleigh.

Could it be that I have not found other children and your Frances is a sister?

I am checking through the Southleigh transcripts from OFHS (so far nearly finished Southleigh then onto Stanton Harcourt etc..) but have not found the parents of John. There seem to be several likely candidates from the area
(Witney) making him difficult to pin down.

I hope to link him in to my main line of enquiry (my wife's family) which is from a Caesar HARRIS from Barrington, just over the county border in Gloucestershire. Here again there are two to choose from born within three years of one another (perhaps cousins?), one from Little Barrington and one from Great Barrington.

If anyone can help with either of these I would be eternally greatful! :o)

Sorry it is not straight forward but it appears so far that Al is correct in thinking there could be two HARRIS lines in Southleigh (or may be more?).

    Peter

    Dear Al

The trouble with Chipping Norton is that it is quite near the Gloucestershire border and your Harrises may have come from Gloucs. Nevertheless, there are many populations in Oxon., with concentrations of Harrises. The big problem is that the PRs often don't cover the 16th century and you will have to rely in many places on Wills. You could start with the Will of Samuel HARRIS of Chipping Norton, in 1616, then within a reasonably small radius, that of William HARRYS of Chilson, Charlbury in 1554, followed by that of Joane HARRYS, probably his widow, in 1558. There is also the Will of Symon HARRYS, mason, of Charlbury, 1588, John HARRYS of Hook Norton, 1592, widow Margaret, 1594, Ralph HARRIS of Kingham, 1603. There is then a continung series of Harris wills for Chilson and Charlbury, up to the 18th century.

    Kind regards

    Keith

    Thanks Maureen,

That is very kind of you.

I don't need dates or anything; I just want to know if there were any HARRIS families in Chipping Norton registered in the Baptism records before 1600 and also a feel for how many families if there was more than one.

    Many Thanks,
    Al

Nicholas and Nancy Vanbrocklin were enumerated twice in the 1870 census. The first time, they were at home in Plessis, Alexandria Township, Jefferson County, NY. Then they must have gone to visit Alex Vanbrocklin soon after the census taker left their house, for three days later, we find them enumerated again in Alex Vanbrocklin's household. Both names and ages are the same.

Nicholas married Anna Nancy Schell 31 Dec 1815, Herkimer, Herkimer County, New York. Anna (daughter of Johannes Marcus Schell and Catharina Elisabeth Raan) was born 1795; died 1883, Jefferson County, New York, USA; was buried 1883, Alexandria, Jefferson County, New York. [Group Sheet]
