Short answer no, not yet at least.

Following up on messages from Al I currently have a John HARRIS m to an Ann MAYCOCK 21st October 1798 in Stanton Harcourt. As yet I only have one child, James HARRIS born 16th January 1804 in Southleigh.

Could it be that I have not found other children and your Frances is a sister?

I am checking through the Southleigh transcripts from OFHS (so far nearly finished Southleigh then onto Stanton Harcourt etc..) but have not found the parents of John. There seem to be several likely candidates from the area
(Witney) making him difficult to pin down.

I hope to link him in to my main line of enquiry (my wife's family) which is from a Caesar HARRIS from Barrington, just over the county border in Gloucestershire. Here again there are two to choose from born within three years of one another (perhaps cousins?), one from Little Barrington and one from Great Barrington.

If anyone can help with either of these I would be eternally greatful! :o)

Sorry it is not straight forward but it appears so far that Al is correct in thinking there could be two HARRIS lines in Southleigh (or may be more?).

    Dear Al

The trouble with Chipping Norton is that it is quite near the Gloucestershire border and your Harrises may have come from Gloucs. Nevertheless, there are many populations in Oxon., with concentrations of Harrises. The big problem is that the PRs often don't cover the 16th century and you will have to rely in many places on Wills. You could start with the Will of Samuel HARRIS of Chipping Norton, in 1616, then within a reasonably small radius, that of William HARRYS of Chilson, Charlbury in 1554, followed by that of Joane HARRYS, probably his widow, in 1558. There is also the Will of Symon HARRYS, mason, of Charlbury, 1588, John HARRYS of Hook Norton, 1592, widow Margaret, 1594, Ralph HARRIS of Kingham, 1603. There is then a continung series of Harris wills for Chilson and Charlbury, up to the 18th century.

    Kind regards

    Keith

Looks like they moved in to Chipping Norton from elsewhere then (unless there was a big gap between generations).

    Thanks Maureen,

That is very kind of you.

I don't need dates or anything; I just want to know if there were any HARRIS families in Chipping Norton registered in the Baptism records before 1600 and also a feel for how many families if there was more than one.

    Many Thanks,
    Al
