Thomas Tear quoted William Tear, jnr, as 15 but did say that at that time the Manx did not pay great attention to birthdates, and that Joaney Gawne came from Jurby; the IGI lists a marriage William Tear and Joney Gawne at Andreas 24 Mar 1808; their eldest son William was christened on 28 March 1813 at Andreas.
This William Tear is the author of two letters that helped spark the migration - see letter of Nov 18th 1826 and that of 25th December 1826 .
The Gawnes are I think John Gawne and Ann Sansbury, married 30 March 1815 at Kk Christ Rushen where son John was christened 10 Jan 1816.

The account left by Thomas Tear is probably much more typical of the type of conditions encountered by the the 'middle class' Manx emigrants of the 1820's and 1830's.
We were finally put on board a small brig, if I remember rightly, of 200 tons, but seems wrong, to me, as she had on 200 passengers, mostly Irish [ see Act of 1819 which limited passengers 2 per 5 ton burthen]. Her name was Amelia of Liverpool, at the helm was, Captain Tagert. They had no such accommodations, as they advertised. We occupied what was called the second cabin, with some English people, and a few better class Irish, on the opposite side of the cabin. But It was not separated from the steerage, as I think it was called, by any door, which was on the same deck, and just forward of us, and was filled with Irish. It was separated from the cabin by a rough board partition, with cracks that the children could peek through.
The passenger quarters had three rows of berths all around, and there were two low benches, which was all the furniture there was in our part. There were two hatches over the passengers, affording all the light and ventilation that passengers had, and if It was rough, these were partly closed. There was a coal fire, in a grate on deck for the passengers to cook by. One man died on the passage, but to me, the wonder, is that half of them were not dead. The scent down there in that dirty, ill-ventilated hole, was anything but sweet. Mother was sick all the way, also Mrs. Gawne, but the rest, stood it well. The burden of cooking fell on my oldest sister, but she seemed to benefit by it. The passengers carried and cooked their own provisions, and as the fire would not accommodate them all at once. This made considerable dissatisfaction, eating was done, without setting of tables, and just as you could catch it.

Journalier, manouvrier, brassier are apparently the same occupation, just called differently in different areas.
It appears that it can cover various things, depending on locality. It seems to suggest a "daily" worker - if in a rural area, someone who helped out at the harvest and otherwise took odd jobs here and there working for farmers, perhaps also having a small amount of land to work themselves, or another secondary job such as weaving to cover the winter months. If in a town, someone who took jobs by the day as and when they came up.

I have a scan of a pamphlet about towns & their origins from the genealogy dept. of the Flower Memorial Library that I got from Bill Freeman. It says the origin of LeRay was Brownville (1806) and the original of Brownville was Leyden (1802).

The Town of Leyden was established March 10, 1797 according to this website: http://www.towpathinn.com/history.htm

Hope that helps. I learned a lot researching this question. :)

I am writing to you in hopes of finding more details of an event which took place many years ago.

In particular, the event was a rather gruesome one, however it involved one of my ancestors, Robert Sixbury. What does the name Robert Sixbury have to do with your organization?
Let me explain....(See references noted below)

Dr. John Grafton, a former member of your organization (1),(2) was called to the home of my ancestor many years ago (exact date uncertain). His purpose was to amputate (if necessary) the right leg of Robert Sixbury who had fallen asleep in front of his fireplace, apparently with his right leg a bit too close to the fire. (3) After the successful amputation, he lived many more years, (approximately to the age of 110).

I am hoping that you could lead me to the source of additional information about the specific date of the amputation/operation of my ancestors right leg.
Does your organization have any records about the appointments kept by Dr. John Grafton from the "4 Iron Block" location (4) in Watertown, New York?
If not, is there another source of information which could lead me in the right direction?

(3) Sixberry Watches Doctor Cut His Leg Off With Saw -- Old Man Tells Young Physician Instrument Is a Bit Dull After Operation is Performed -- Burned Leg in Fire After Return From Long Hunting Expedition. By Ernest G. Cook, Watertown Daily Times, Saturday September 21, 1929, Watertown Daily Times.
"When the doctor arrived, driving by horse and buggy from Watertown to the Sixberry home, it was found to be a young man who had but recently opened his office in the city. His name was Dr. Grafton and he was sure he could give proper aid to the suffering man. He advised amputation at once, taking his leg off just below the knee."
